Charles Reece was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he fell in love with the game of basketball. Charles attended Central Commerce Collegiate and graduated in 1996. He played two years on the Junior Varsity team and two years on the Varsity team, During that span he was a 20 points/game scorer and team captain from grade 10-12. He also played on a couple of travel that allowed him to play in games and tournaments across Toronto, in Montreal, in New York and in Michigan. During Charles’ senior year in high school he was being recruited by the head coach of the University of Toronto to attend and play for the school but Charles eventually declined the offer in order to attend a college in Rhode Island for religious studies.
Charles return to competitive basketball when he became an assistant coach on his son’s fifth grade and then six grade teams in the Burlington Lions Club house league program in 2015 and 2016. The following year, 2017, he became a head coach in the same league, leading his team to a win the consolation finals. During that summer Charles worked with the director of the Burlington United Sports AAU program to build two teams to put into the Torrington Summer League . Charles was the assistant coach for one of those teams but ended up taking over the head coaching duties during the last month of the season. In 2018 another door opened for him to continue coaching as an assistant on the Harwinton Youth Sports Association (HYSA) travel basketball team.
Charles’ passion for coaching comes from a desire to develop confident young people by using the game of basketball. His coaching philosophy focuses on three main things in order to create a fun yet challenging atmosphere where players can grow. 1. Mastering the fundamental skills of the game, 2. Teaching players how to think the game of basketball, and 3. Setting improvement goals for each player throughout the season in order to help reach our team goals and to develop that individual player’s work ethic and character.
